Dr. Robert Ing presents his East York Museum of Curiosities, a traveling mobile museum exhibit providing a once in a lifetime opportunity to personally experience the theatrics and "artifacts" that astounded attendees of Cabinets of Curiosities from the 15th to 18th centuries and were the precursors to the modern day museum. +++ Cabinets of Curiosities were collections of artifacts both of fact and fantasy. The collections in the cabinet often reflected the interests or profession of their owners. In the 15th century, the term cabinet described a room rather than a piece of furniture, and the Cabinet of Curiosities was a room that displayed the personal collection of a ruler, aristocrat or scientist. Many artifacts were collected during exploring expeditions, trading voyages or received as gifts from visiting dignitaries. As these cabinets were privately owned, their contents were viewed only by select friends, guests and relatives. They represented the only rare opportunity where most could examine exotic artifacts such as a rhino horn, a human skull, a mermaid, a shrunken head or a meteorite fragment. +++ This online exhibit displays a small selection from the more than 300 piece private collection of Dr. Ing, featuring real, rare and original fictional artifacts, never seen before in this century and perhaps may never to be seen again, in the spirit of an age when the world was smaller and fantasy sparked science.
